About this Event
We are delighted to collaborate with artist, film-maker and programmer Tako Taal, to present the series 'What happens to desire…' for the 2021 commissions programme. At Johnston Terrace Wildlife Garden two artists, Sequoia Barnes and Matthew Arthur Williams, are exhibited.
Reminiscent of a shrine, a quilt forms the centerpiece of an installation that manifests a material and tactile approach to communicate with ghosts. In a new textile installation Sequoia Barnes seeks answers to her questions about the journey sculptor Edmonia Lewis and Frederick Douglass made to Naples in 1887. The artist would like to encourage visitors to leave offerings/objects of goodwill to these two spirits to encourage communication between us and the afterlife.
Matthew Arthur Williams presents an exhibition of photographic prints set against the lush greenery of Johnston Terrace Gardens. Captured in various locations on the West coast of Scotland including during a Bothy Projects residency on the Isle of Eigg. Williams’ references a long history of portraits in the landscape citing specifically the photographers Ajamu X and Ingrid Pollard.
Supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals Expo Fund and EventScotland. Our festival-led programme is kindly supported by the Patrons of our Commissioning Circle.
Visitor Information
The Johnston Terrace Wildlife Garden is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. It is it's smallest reserve located in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, near to Edinburgh Castle, off the Patrick Geddes steps. Originally commissioned for the 2017 Edinburgh Art Festival, the garden hosts artist Bobby Niven's 'Palm House'.
Accessibility
The Johnston Terrace Wildlife Garden is located down 25 steps on Castle Wynd South/ the Patrick Geddes Steps just off Johnston Terrace. You enter the garden through a small gate which is 775mm wide. Throughout the wild habitat is a narrow raised wooden boardwalk (558mm) with metal netting to avoid slipping when wet. The garden is a wild habitat so the ground is uneven throughout with either cobbles or exposed ground.
Toilets
The nearest toilets and accessible toilets are still to be confirmed due to COVID-19 measures.
Staff
The venue is staffed by Edinburgh Art Festival Information Assistants who are happy to provide visitors with information about the work.
