The Trail & District Arts Council presents Sentimental Value (Affeksjonsverdi) at Monday Cinema on Monday, December 1 at 4 pm at The Royal Theatre in Trail.Winner of the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Sentimental Value is a powerful exploration of art, ambition, and the cost of family.
Once celebrated, filmmaker Gustav Borg (Stellan Skarsgård) has spent years chasing the shadows of his past success. His fortunes shift when rising Hollywood star Rachel Kemp (Elle Fanning) rediscovers his films at a retrospective and agrees to star in his latest project. But the story he chooses to tell—drawn from a painful family tragedy—reopens old wounds.
Gustav’s estranged daughters are forced back into his orbit: Nora (Renate Reinsve), a brilliant stage actress who refused the role Rachel now inhabits, and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), the steady sister caught between them. As art and life collide, resentments surface, loyalties are tested, and the line between creation and exploitation blurs.
With masterful performances by Skarsgård, Reinsve, Fanning, and Lilleaas, director Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World) delivers a deeply moving drama about the fragile ties that bind us and the sacrifices we make for legacy.
