1. What is a Sensory Mass?
A sensory-friendly Mass is one way of creating a welcoming environment that families and individuals with Autism or other intellectual and developmental disabilities long for. It can provide an environment where someone with sensory processing issues can feel free to, use noise canceling headphones, sunglasses, fidgets, or other means to help them from becoming overstimulated and participate meaningfully in the Liturgy.
2. Why is it important to have a Sensory Mass?
Attending church services continues to be difficult for families or individuals with special needs children. Often they cannot attend as a family and splitting up for Mass is the only option. We are one body in Christ and our worship community should include those with special needs. A sensory Mass allows us to create an environment where people with disabilities and their families can have a space they feel welcomed to worship without becoming agitated or overstimulated. It allows for a more comfortable environment, removes the stigma and allows them to enter more fully into the liturgy.
3. Who is a Sensory Mass intended for?
Anyone is welcome to attend the Sensory Mass however it is specifically designed for individuals and families with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, sensory processing disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, alzhemiers and dementia.
4. What can I bring to a sensory Mass?
Fidgets, noise canceling headphones, alternative seating such as wiggle seats, comforting toys. Families should also know if they need to move around they are free to do so.
