In an effort to embrace and welcome the members of our church with Autism, Down Syndrome, and other intellectual and developmental disabilities, St. Joseph Church in Strongsville, Ohio, will be hosting a "sensory friendly" Mass on Monday, November 11th, at 6:30 PM. This Mass will include lower lights, softer music, scripture from the Children’s Lectionary, and a short homily; Most importantly, we hope to create an environment free of stigma. We encourage families and individuals to get up and move if needed, to bring alternative seating, fidgets or noise cancelling headphones, and to participate in the liturgy just as they are. Many Catholic families who have a disabled member do not attend Mass. They may fear being disruptive, or have had a negative experience in the past. We want those families to know that they are welcome at St. Joseph, not just at this Sensory Friendly Mass, but all the time. Also, this is open to everyone! Maybe you’re a parent with loud toddlers who feels banished to the cry room: the front rows are for you! Here's a social story to use before you come, and during the Mass! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sJVysFNdtrPexujpiQhe6k4gThSTdCCa/view?usp=sharing
