About this Event

Our Sensory-Accessible Concerts season five opening performance features multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Mohammad Sahraei alongside our series host and pianist Jennifer King. Presented as part of the 2025 Prismatic Arts Festival, the concert incudes Persian classical music on tar with ornamented melodies and steady rhythms, traditional music from Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kurdistan on dotar and daff with vibrant textures and cyclical patterns, and Western classical works that pair tar and piano to reveal resonances between traditions. Born in Iran and now living in Halifax, Mohammad is a versatile musician and scholar whose work bridges Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and Western musical practices. Known for founding ensembles such as Open Borders and Tillit, he has performed at the Halifax Jazz Festival, the Open Waters Festival, and with the Rumi Ensemble, among many others. Later this season he will appear with Symphony Nova Scotia in “Vivaldi Meets the Middle East,” which explores the intersection between Baroque and folk music. Co-presented with the Halifax Central Library and Prismatic Arts Festival, this free concert provides a safe and welcoming space for everyone to experience live music in a relaxed setting.

The Sensory-Accessible Concerts series is made possible through the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, the Harrison McCain Foundation, the Craig Foundation, the Cecilia Concerts Season Sponsor Nice Moves / Red Door Realty, and our presenting partner the Halifax Public Libraries. We appreciate the gifts from the many individual donors who continue to support this important initiative.
