First ever Jane Austen Book Club Meeting!
Since this is the first meeting we will start with introducing ourselves and share our favorite Austen and non-Austen books along with maybe a fun fact about yourself if you feel like sharing. Then we will have a round table-type discussion. I will have some prompts to get us started but I hope to keep things fairly informal. Look for me wearing a black Pemberley t-shirt. See you there! \~ Lisa
About the Book:
We are reading Austen’s six major novels in the order in which she wrote them. This is so we can see how her writing style grew and matured over time. Sense and Sensibility is the first novel that Austen wrote and completed. It is also her literary debut published in 1811. At the time it was not entirely suitable for a woman of her status to publish for profit. The novel was published anonymously as “Sense and Sensibility by a Lady.”
'The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!'
Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment, even from those closest to her. Through their parallel experience of love—and its threatened loss—the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.
