Senior Love Triangle: Panel and Book Signing

Magnum Foundation invites you to an in-person panel and book signing celebrating (Kehrer Verlag, 2020), the debut monograph by 2012 Inge Morath Awardee Isadora Kosofsky. The event will feature Kosofksy in discussion with Elizabeth Krist, former Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic Magazine, followed by a Q&A and book signing.

Photographed in Los Angeles, documents three senior citizens in a romantic conflict. Jeanie, age 81, and Adina, age 90, share William, age 84, as a partner and companion, often all spending time together. In his late 70s, Will formed a relationship with Adina. Then, Will moved into another retirement home where he fell in love with Jeanie. Since Will did not want to choose between Jeanie and Adina, they formed a trio. While pushing against sociocultural norms about senior citizens, the relationships among Jeanie, Will and Adina reveal ageless needs, anxieties, and contradictions. Looking for connection, Jeanie, Will, and Adina seek refuge in each other, but eventually go separate ways. “There are many different kinds of love,” said Adina.

Isadora Kosofsky is a documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She began photographing at the age of fourteen, documenting individuals in hospice care. Isadora often takes an immersive approach to visual storytelling, spending months and years embedded in the lives of the people she shadows. She works on a range of subject matters from a humanistic stance, shadowing one individual or group of people. She has documented healthcare, aging, mental health, disability rights, the impacts of incarceration, substance use, gender violence, childhood trauma, and experiences of grief, loss, and resilience; she photographed extensively inside hospitals and long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic for the New York Times and others.

In 2012, Kosofsky was was the recipient of the Inge Morath Award, a grant made each year to a woman or non-binary photographer under the age of 30 to support the completion of a long-term documentary project. The award is given by the Magnum Foundation, the Inge Morath Estate, and Magnum Photos in honor of the pioneering and prolific Inge Morath (1923–2002).

“The Inge Morath Award was the most impactful recognition program that I have been a part of. It helped validate my place in the field…A few months before, an editor laughed at me and said that I was too young to be published in her magazine. When you become an Inge Morath Awardee and are able to walk through her archive and peruse her field notes, you become a part of a significant legacy. When you begin to channel a bit of Inge’s spirit, you’re reminded not to worry about the assumptions, opinions, and judgements of others. Remembering Inge and other women identified documentary photographers who came before me, I am reminded to keep lighting my own fires and to keep them burning no matter what. In her photographs and words, I am reminded that my greatest responsibility and duty is with the people I am privileged to shadow as a documentarian."
