The dun dun dance is a choreographic and musical practice of Mandingo culture in which dance, music, and song form a single expression. Based on the dun dun, the fundamental low drums of West Africa, it accompanies Mandengue dances, linked to traditional ceremonies and community rituals. Characterized by energetic and symbolic movements, these dances express values โโof strength, resilience, and community. Today, they have become a global performance form, integrating contemporary elements while keeping alive the ancestral roots of Mandinga culture.
Sabar originated as a traditional dance of the Wolof people and has historically been practiced primarily by women, who played a leading role in ritual and social contexts such as ceremonies and community festivals. Beginning in the 1960s, with the modernization of Senegalese culture, the influence of Ballets Afriques, and the internationalization of dance (including in the context of the Black Power movement), men began to participate more visibly, emphasizing the performative aspect. Today, Sabar is danced by both sexes, with a greater male presence in professional contexts, while maintaining the central role of women in traditional forms.
SOUROUBA DANCE
Sourouba dance, originally from Casamance, is a sacred tradition of the Diola and Socรฉ communities, linked to the cycles of the earth and social rites. Characterized by energetic and rhythmic movements, it expresses community cohesion and belonging. Today, while maintaining its cultural value, it has adapted to contemporary contexts, becoming a bridge between tradition and modernity.
