Dr. Valerie Matthews is an animal behaviorist with a BA from Bucknell University in Animal Behavior and an MS and Ph.D. in Biopsychology from the University of Georgia. Her work on aggression in domestic ferrets was published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association and she has done fieldwork with the North American black-footed ferret. She has been a professor for over 20 years at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, OH where she offers a Theoretical Foundations in Animal Training Badge. Her seminar will offer foundational information on the science of animal training, with an overview of operant conditioning techniques, and also a closer look at techniques for reducing unwanted behaviors. Then those concepts will be applied to the challenges of working with dogs with reactivity issues. While her academic background contributes considerably to her dog training practice, she would say that Blaze, her highly reactive German Wirehaired Pointer, taught her more than any textbook about training in the real world.
