Set partly in the Boston area, NOW, VOYAGER dwells more so in the heart—the heart’s “untold wants”—whose longing leads to the awakening of the film’s heroine, played by an irrepressible Bette Davis. This seminar explores the film by focusing on its moment of release in 1942. We will embark on a deep dive into trends in the ideas, leisure pursuits, and fashions of its moment to illuminate the way the film works on its heroine and its audiences.
