SAVE THE DATE!Sembrando Herencia 2024 - Más Que Pantalones
22nd Original Community Theatre Musical
with special guest Rupert Reyes
December 14-15, 2024
Our 22nd original Musical - Más Que Pantalones - is inspired by the life of Luisa Capetillo -- labor union leader, activist, writer, anarchist, and spiritist -- who tirelessly defended the rights of women and poor agricultural workers. Despite her important contributions in the early 20th century as a passionate labor movement leader, she is most popularly remembered as the 1st woman in Puerto Rico to wear pants.
Based in oral and documented history, this historical fiction is written by Tekina-eirú in English, Spanish, and Taino. It is set in the mid 1970s and circa 1917 and honors early 20th century female union leaders who fought for the rights of women and laborers and opened the doors to feminism in Puerto Rico! Traditions inherited from our Boricua Taino ancestors are also included!
We are excited that this year's annual mainstage production includes special guest Rupert Reyes, celebrated Latino playwright, actor, director, producer and co-founder of Teatro Vivo, a bilingual theater in Austin, Texas.
Our musical includes original Jibaro, Salon, Plena, Bomba, and Taino music written by Tekina-eirú. It will feature a full cast of actors, dancers, musicians, and Cocobalé -- STICKS & MACHETE FIGHTING -- to bring history to life!
This musical will take place on Saturday, December 14 (6:30pm) and Sunday, December 15 (3pm) at the Huston-Tillotson University, King-Seabrook Chapel, 900 Chicon St, Austin, TX 78702.
