About this Event

In today's economy, with increasing costs, product shortages, etc. People are searching more eagerly for things from the "times of old" or the "good old days" and are yearning to move out of cities into the country and become more self-sufficient. Gardens, backyard chickens, canning, bread making are all becoming more and more common. How does one get started in all of this? We've come so far from knowledge of land and earth and how it can provide for us. It's become vital to work together to learn and teach ourselves in order to pass on our individual knowledge. This year, join us as we visit different families across the US as they share with us the different things they've done to become ever more self-sufficient.

Dawn Lamoureux-Crocker is the owner and head shepherdess of Starboard Farm in Machiasport Maine, In this event, guests will be introduced to the basics of keeping sheep on their homestead with a guided virtual tour. Topics of discussion can/will include popular breeds of sheep. What are your goals and needs? Wool, meat, land clearing or all of the above? Basic flock care requirements, calculating feed and other costs. Care of the pregnant ewe. Lambing. How to market by products of your flock such as yarn, soap, manure, meat or cheese. Over the last 15 years Dawn has built her farm and her flock to a sustainable venture where she now makes a living raising registered Southdown Babydoll sheep, Exhibition Dewlap Toulouse geese, Emery Penciled runner ducks, bees, and chickens. Dawn is also a quarterly contributing writer for Backwoods Home, Self Reliance and GRIT magazine addressing the topics of sustainable agriculture, animal care and rural lifestyle.

Announcing a NEW WAY TO DONATE! We are releasing 2020's Cuisine of Different Cultures E-Cookbook to you for a $10 donation towards Atlantic Institute. When you make your donation, the cookbook will be emailed to you the day of the program you are participating in. This cookbook is packed with over 15 creative recipes that launched us into the online world of our cooking demonstrations during the time of Covid. This was a time that all of us were coming together to learn how to cook something different and interesting with limited resources on hand so this cookbook is full of interesting recipes you will want to have by your side.

If you aren't into cooking like we are, we are still accepting and are super appreciative of coffee!
