About the event:
The SEER Science Fair will take place on May 16 from 1-3pm.
It is $5 per child to participate. When you sign up you will get an invoice for the fee via email or you can pay in cash before May 1. Children who are Enrolled in SEER's Science or Tinker Club do not have to pay a fee. The fee goes toward prizes and a gift for our judges who are taking time out of their lives to contribute to science!
FUMC (right across the road from SEER) is allowing us to use their fellowship hall. You can park at SEER or across the street for this event or utilize street parking.
Each age group will have a first, second and third place winner with prizes donated from local businesses.
Event Schedule
11am-12pm - Presentations must be set up
1:00-3:00pm - Science Fair Event
2:00pm - Winner Announced
The Science Fair portion open to the public will take place from 1-3pm. All projects will need to be set up for judging between 12-1pm! Parents must stay with their children. Family members are welcome to come to the public portion of this event from 1:00-3:00pm.
Science Fair Guidelines
To do a science fair project a child/student will ask a question. All good science starts with a question!
They will need to:
Ask a question
Guess at the answer to that question
Test that answer by doing an experiment
Draw a conclusion about whether or not the answer to the question was correct!

It is as simple or as complicated as you make it! Any question that can be tested will make a good science fair project. There are thousands of ideas out there on the web if you are having trouble getting started. As with any 2scientific experiment, your scientist will need to take notes and document the process of the experiment. This can be used to prepare a poster which describes their project. It is very important that they be able to explain their hypothesis, results, data gathering process and conclusions on their poster which will be what is displayed at the fair.

When should you start?
That depends entirely on your experiment. You will need to fill out a registration form giving us a small bit of information about your idea for your project by April 1.

Children should do as much of this work as they can independently, draw their own conclusions and work on their own projects. Parents should absolutely help, but they should not do the majority of the work.

After your science work has been done this is where a display board comes in. The information on the display board can be hand-written or typed. It is perfectly acceptable for a parent to help a child by typing what the child dictates for their presentation board. Your child should be able to explain all the steps of what they did. This display board is their opportunity to do that.

For the display boards you will want:
Pictures of your experiment
A title for the project (Projectile pigs)
The question (Can pigs fly?)
A clearly stated hypothesis -this is your guess about the answer to the question (Pigs can definitely fly!)
Materials and Equipment - what you used for your experiment (like a cannon to test out the pig theory)
Resources - Who helped you or what sources did you use to help with your experiment (local pig farming experts)
Results and Data - Your description of what happened when you did the experiment along with any and all accompanying data or a highlight reel of the data if there is a lot! (Pig entered cannon, was shot approximately 20 feet, did not achieve maximum altitude or self sustained momentum)
Procedures - The plan for testing your question and why you chose to do it this way (Why did you choose to launch that poor pig in a canon anyway?)
Conclusion - This is where you tell us and the judges what you were able to glean from your experiment. (Did your question have a satisfactory answer? No conclusion? Was your guess correct or not? Is the pig going to need therapy?)
Personal information - This is important! Each project board will need a child’s initial and last name as well as their age. Projects will be divided and judged by age. Kids 4-7yrs old are going to be grouped together. Children 8yrs and up will be grouped together.
You may bring some examples of your experiment to display with your poster as long as they are appropriate.
Please do not bring
Hazardous materials
Anything that needs electricity, water or gas
Animals of any kind (please do not experiment on animals!)
Open containers of microorganisms or fungi (if you are displaying these they need to be via pictures or in sealed and closed containers as they can present a biological hazard!)

***All presentations will be inspected for these materials prior to judging and you may be asked to remove your presentation if it violates any of those rules.***

Please do bring:
A sturdy display board of some kind not to exceed - Width - 4ft, Depth - 2ft, Height - 4ft
It will need to stand on its own!
Any items that do not violate the aforementioned list to go in front of your display board
Notes you might like to display for a judge to peruse
Pen, tape or glue in case you need to quickly fix something on your display
