Event will be at the Holden Room on the 2nd floor of Crandall Library.Learn how to collect and store seeds from native plants! And learn how to contribute seeds to our upcoming Native Seed Swap in late November. Both events are free and open to the public.
Why use native plants?
1) Easy maintenance: Plants that originated in our region of New York are adapted to our region's climate and soil types.
2) Restores ecosystem: Aside from the European honeybee, there are hundreds of species of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators native to our region that rely on native plants to properly feed their larvae and themselves. The seeds of these plants and the greater variety of larvae they support also attract a greater variety of birds. Additionally, many native plants have root systems that help to absorb and filter water in the soil, and some species even fixate nitrogen in the soil.
Featured plants at the Collect & Cleaning workshop will include: Spotted Horsemint/ Spotted Bee Balm, Red Bee Balm, Cardinal Flower, Blue Lobelia, Partridge Pea, Columbine*, Lanceleaf Coreopsis*, Foxglove Beardtongue, Indian Tobacco*, Joe Pye W**d, Echinacea (Purple Coneflower), Black Eyed Susans, Goldenrod*, Yarrow, Butterfly W**d
*The seed species marked with an asterisk were taken from plants that volunteered in the Queensbury/ Glens Falls area.
All species except the partridge pea are perennial.
The yarrow, blue lobelia, spotted horsemint, and partridge pea parent plants flowered in their first year.
