Event: MasterclassGenre: Children's Lit
Level: Emerging
Instructor: Y.S. Lee
For the first time, Kingston WritersFest offers a master class in the craft of writing picture books for all adult writers, including emerging writers. This hands-on workshop begins by exploring the key elements that make a picture book compelling.
Over the course of a few key conversations, author Ying Lee will provide writing prompts and practical exercises. The morning concludes with participants sharing their work in a constructive, collaborative workshop format. Attendees will leave with a strong sense of the core elements of a compelling picture book, practical exercises for continuing to polish their work, and a recommendation for their next creative steps. Those with existing ideas and manuscripts-in-progress are invited to bring them along.
Y. S. Lee is author of the critically acclaimed YA mystery series The Agency, which was translated into six languages and won the Canadian Children’s Book Centre’s inaugural John Spray Mystery Award. Her debut picture book, Mrs. Nobody, illustrated by Marie Lafrance, was published in April of 2025, to much critical acclaim.
