Every month, the Shasta Cyclists Coalition hosts Second Saturday Cycles, a community-driven event across various localities in Shasta County. Participants, representing their respective areas, start at their city hall with their bicycles—either ridden there or transported by car. The event involves cycling to important local destinations or back home, during which participants carefully document their journey, paying particular attention to any inadequate cycling infrastructure or hazards. This documentation is shared on the coalition’s Facebook group to aid in data compilation for lobbying efforts towards cycling infrastructure improvements. Additionally, participants engage in community service by clearing trash and debris from bike lanes and road shoulders, enhancing the perception of cycling as a responsible and impactful activity. Participants are encouraged to bring bike maintenance equipment and spare safety gear to assist each other before the event begins, wear high-visibility vests, and to share their community efforts online, promoting cycling as the noble endeavor it is.
