This immersive Black History Month cooking class invites guests into the heart of Black American culinary tradition through dishes rooted in Louisiana, family, and community. Guided by Chef Evelyn, you’ll prepare an authentic Seafood & Chicken Gumbo, Southern Sweet Potato Casserole, and classic New Orleans Bread Pudding with Caramel Rum Sauce recipes that have long nourished generations and carried stories of resilience, creativity, and care.
Southern Story:
Chef Evelyn shares personal reflections from summers spent in Louisiana with family and her deep connection to Southern roots, exploring how food became a foundation for family bonds, cultural identity, and community stability. More than a cooking class, this is a cultural engagement experience where history is honored, traditions are passed down, and the table becomes a place of remembrance, learning, and togetherness.
Guests will cook, taste, and connect while learning the techniques, history, and meaning behind these iconic dishes—celebrating Black American heritage through the power of food, commiunity and connection.

Authentic Louisiana Seafood & Chicken Gumbo
A deeply flavorful, slow-simmered gumbo built on a traditional dark roux with seafood, chicken, aromatics, and Southern seasoning—rooted in Louisiana home kitchens and communal tables.
Southern Sweet Potato Casserole
Creamy spiced sweet potatoes baked with a golden, comforting topping—an iconic dish tied to family gatherings, celebration, and Southern Black tradition.
New Orleans Bread Pudding with Caramel Rum Sauce
Warm, custardy bread pudding finished with a rich caramel rum sauce, honoring New Orleans dessert traditions and the joy of shared endings at the table.
What to Expect:
• You'll partner with other students in groups of four, sharing workstations and culinary equipment.
• Classes typically run for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, unless otherwise indicated.
• Our hands-on classes maintain a cozy size, accommodating 12-20 students, in Shed 5 at Eastern Market
• Be prepared for an active session, as you'll be on your feet, cooking, and fully engaged for the majority of the class.
• For your comfort and safety, we recommend wearing comfortable, closed-toe shoes and securing long hair away from your face.
• Evelyn’s Midtown Kitchen is committed to maintaining common sanitation standards, and for this reason, you may be asked to wash your hands multiple times to contribute to the safety of food handling.
