Sea Power are one of the most singular and quietly influential bands to emerge from the UK in the past two decades. Since forming at the turn of the millennium, the group have built a reputation for fearless invention, sweeping emotional power and a fiercely independent spirit—earning admirers ranging from Lou Reed and David Bowie to Peter Capaldi, Daniel Radcliffe and Benedict Cumberbatch. Their music has taken them from clubs and village halls to the Great Wall of China, CERN’s particle-physics labs and London’s Natural History Museum, where they performed beneath the famed Diplodocus skeleton.
Originally known as British Sea Power, the band—brothers Yan and Hamilton Wilkinson, guitarist Martin Noble, drummer Matthew Wood, and later multi-instrumentalists Abi Fry and Phil Sumner—first made their mark through electrifying, idiosyncratic live shows. These unpredictable performances, often decorated with foliage and featuring unexpected guests such as birds of prey or centuries-old folk singers, earned them Time Out’s Live Band of the Year and breathless praise from Rolling Stone and the UK music press.
Their 2003 debut The Decline of British Sea Power announced a band of rare scope, from choral miniatures to the 14-minute epic “Lately.” It was hailed as a dazzling, out-of-this-world debut and established the group as one of the most ambitious voices in modern British guitar music. Follow-up albums cemented their stature: 2005’s Open Season and 2008’s Do You Like Rock Music?—the latter a Top 10 record and Mercury Prize nominee—expanded their reach and influence, with festival anthems like “Waving Flags” becoming part of the era’s soundtrack.
Alongside their studio work, Sea Power developed a parallel life as acclaimed composers for film, television and games. Their soundtracks for Man of Aran and From the Sea to the Land Beyond were widely celebrated for their atmospheric depth, while their score for the groundbreaking videogame Disco Elysium won the BAFTA for Best Original Music in 2020 and became the band’s most-streamed release, helping introduce them to a new global audience.
In 2021 the band shortened their name to Sea Power, distancing themselves from unhelpful associations with nationalism while staying true to their deep affection for the landscapes and communities of the British Isles. Their 2022 album Everything Was Forever became their highest-charting release, debuting at Number 1 midweek and ultimately reaching Number 4 in the UK Albums Chart. The album’s singles received their strongest national radio support to date.
Another key strand of the Sea Power story is Krankenhaus, their uniquely curated festival at Muncaster Castle in the Lake District. Since launching in 2019 it has grown into one of the UK’s most beloved small festivals, praised by The Guardian as “genuinely unique” and voted Best UK Festival by listeners to BBC 6 Music.
In recent years the band have continued to reach new generations: a sell-out 2025 UK soundtrack tour drew a strikingly young audience, and a subsequent 10-date tour of China saw thousands of new fans embrace both their game compositions and their back catalogue with unprecedented enthusiasm.
More than twenty years into their voyage, Sea Power remain a band of potent imagination and unshakable individuality—still exploring, still evolving, and still making work that resonates across oceans, genres and generations.
