Surfrider is working with the City of Cape Canaveral this year, who is hosting its annual sea oat planting event on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm or until all plants have been planted.
This year the City has 19,776 sea oats, and Surfrider will be helping!
Trays of sea oats will be placed at the east end of the beach crossovers between Cherie Down Park and Ocean Woods, along with all necessary supplies (i.e. digging supplies and hydration gel packs) and planting instructions. Simply arrive at a beach crossover between Cherie Down Park and Ocean Woods and start planting!
Dedicated City volunteers called “Plant Buddies” will be stationed at various crossovers to assist and will be wearing high-visibility yellow safety vests. They will be able to assist you with any planting questions and show individuals where to plant. City Staff will be walking the beach throughout the event to assist and answer any question volunteers may have as well.
ONLY plant sea oats along and within the City’s western dune line. Do not plant any sea oats east of the primary dune line! It is advised you bring water, snacks, and wear sunscreen and/or a hat/sunglasses. If there are no sea oats left to plant at any given crossover, please move north or south to the next crossover until you find more trays.

Beach Cleanup:
Surfrider will also be doing a beach cleanup at the same time as well - we will have buckets, grabbers, and bags to pick up trash. You can find our main table & tent with the trash pickup supplies at Cherie Down Park on the beach - you can't miss us!
Parking:
Available at Cherie Down park, Canaveral City Park/Cape Canaveral Community Center (the closest to Cherie Down Park), Cape Canaveral City Hall, the CAPE Center, and the Cape Canaveral library.
The parking and crossover at Washington Avenue, just south of Cherie Down, will not be accessible due to beach renourishment equipment
