Sea bird and sea mammal spotting on West Bay, with sea bird and sea mammal enthusiast Will Goan.
Dunoon and the Firth of Clyde area is a fascinating place to watch and study seabirds. It is home to the third largest gannetry in Britain, Ailsa Craig! It’s not just gannets that nest here, there is a whole wealth of birds choosing to breed on the small granite island which is what gives the Clyde such an abundance of different breeds of seabirds.
What to expect
-Learn about local seabirds, whale and dolphin populations and how to spot them!
-Enjoy a walk around West Bay and learn how to spot birds and sites of interest.
-Discover why preserving beaches such as West Bay, and breeding grounds such as Ailsa Craig, is so important for local seabird populations.
Good to know
-Meet at the pavillion by the playpark on West Bay.
-All ages and abilities are welcome.
-Please dress for the outdoors and changeable weather.
-Wear sturdy footwear for walking along the beach.
-Equipment will be provided.
-If you have your own binoculars, please bring them.
Meet the activity leader
Will Goan has lived in Argyll since he was three years old. He studied at the Scottish Association for Marine Science and for the last five years he has lived on his boat either in Dunoon or Oban. With a deep love for the ocean (pun not intended), especially the seabirds and cetacea such as whales and dolphins, that call it their home, he has lots of knowledge to share. Will is also a musician with Mac-Talla Music.
About West Bay Wonder
The West Bay Wonder exhibition and activities are part of a series of events taking place over the next 18 months year to inform the development of a Local Place Plan for Dunoon.
This work is facilitated by the Dunoon Community Development Trust and POP shop enterprises CIC and supported by the Dunoon CARS project, the Scottish Government and the National Lottery Community Fund.
