Get into the Halloween spirit with a next-level pumpkin carve! In this 4-hour workshop, The Art League instructor Candice Bloch introduces the techniques of sculptural pumpkin carving—think shaping, peeling, and relief carving to create expressive features and dimensional forms.

This workshop welcomes both beginners and more experienced artists. You’ll see a detailed demonstration, then dive into guided carving of your own project with individual attention in a supportive class environment. You’ll leave with a seasonal, whimsical piece of art ready to display—and the skills to keep carving all October long.

What you’ll learn

  • Safe and effective use of carving tools for dimensional effects
  • Techniques for peeling, shaping, and refining features
  • Tips for design planning and finishing for display

You’ll leave with

  • A finished sculptural pumpkin
  • A clear understanding of tools and techniques to carve more at home

What to bring

Please bring the following:

  • One large pumpkin (at least 11" across)
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Sharp small knife (e.g., X-Acto or similar)
  • Spray bottle (for keeping the surface workable)

Optional but helpful: apron, small towel, container or bag for scraps.

Provided by the instructor/studio:The use of most carving tools will be available during the workshop.


Who should attend

Teens 13+ who love Halloween, fall décor, or want to try a satisfying, hands-on art project. No experience required.


Schedule
  • 2:00–2:30 PM — Welcome & materials overview
  • 2:30–4:15 PM — Demonstration: sculptural techniques
  • 4:15–5:45 PM — Guided carving with individual feedback
  • 5:45–6:15 PM — Dinner/refreshment break (bring your own)
  • 6:15–7:00 PM — Finishing touches & display tips

(Schedule is approximate and allows for a short break.)


Instructor

Candice Bloch — The Art League teaching artist specializing in sculptural, seasonal, and craft-forward workshops. Candice emphasizes clear demos, safety, and approachable techniques for all levels.


Good to know
  • Safety: You’ll be working with sharp tools—please wear closed-toe shoes and follow all safety guidance.
  • Clean-up: Help us keep the studio tidy by bagging pumpkin scraps for disposal/compost.
  • Photos: We may take photos for The Art League’s social media. Tell us at check-in if you prefer not to be photographed.

Tickets/Tuition
  • $125: Includes instruction, studio use, and shared access to most tools. Pumpkin and listed personal tools not included.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Yes! No prior carving or art experience is required.

What size pumpkin should I bring?

Bring a large pumpkin at least 11 inches across to give yourself enough surface to sculpt.

Can teens attend?

This class is designed for Teens (13+). There is also an adult workshop suitable for 18+ on Saturday, October 11, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm
