In celebration of the International Women’s Day, we invite you to reflect on female agency and the enduring legacies of women who have shaped the discourse of art history.
This afternoon’s programme centers on the life and legacy of artist Dora Gordine who was based in Singapore in the 1930s. Once hailed as “very possibly becoming the finest woman sculptor in the world”, Gordine excelled in painting, drawing and sculpture. She received major commissions, including sculptures for the Municipal Building (now part of National Gallery Singapore). Despite her achievements, she remained relatively unknown at the time of her death.
Who was Dora Gordine and how might we understand her works today? Featuring the screening of two short films—Annaleena Piel Linnå’s "Dorich" and Erika Tan’s "Speculative Entanglements"—alongside a sharing by Dr Fiona Fisher (Curator, Dorich House Museum), this programme will delve into Gordine’s life and extensive travels across Europe and Southeast Asia, tracing her practice and the contemporary implications of her works.
The programme will conclude with a conversation between artist Erika Tan and Dr Fiona Fisher, moderated by Dr Adele Tan (Senior Curator and Assistant Director, Curatorial Programmes, National Gallery Singapore). Light refreshments will be provided after the programme.

About the Speakers
Born and educated in Singapore, Erika Tan moved to the UK to study anthropology, then filmmaking, and finally fine art. Her research-based practice evolved from an interest in received narratives, contested heritage, subjugated voices and the transnational movements of ideas, people and things; it responds to the unravelling of facts & fictions. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Jakarta Biennale and the Diaspora Pavilion in Venice, as well as institutions like National Gallery Singapore, Tate, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, ZKM – Centre for Art and Media, and 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art. She is also Reader in Contemporary Art Practice and MAFA Course Leader in Central Saint Martins.
Dr. Fiona Fisher is a member of the Modern Interiors Research Centre at Kingston University where she is curator of the university’s Dorich House Museum, the 1930s former studio home of the artist Dora Gordine and her husband Richard Hare. Her research interests include modern public house design in England, British domestic interiors in relation to suburban modernity, and the interior design of the English care home. Fiona’s publications include "The Picker House & Collection: A Late 1960s Home for Art & Design" (2013), "Designing the British Post-War Home: Kenneth Wood, 1948–1968" (2015) and "British Design: Tradition & Modernity After 1948" (2015). More recently, she contributed to "The Senses in Interior Design: Sensorial Expression & Experiences" (2024) and is a co-editor of "Exhibition as Interior, Interior as Exhibition: Spaces of Display Within & Beyond the Museum & Gallery" (2025). Fiona is currently collaborating with Dr Rebecca Preston on a study of the history of London’s roof gardens.
