The second night of the Silvestrov Days in Paris features a documentary screening, providing further insight into the enigmatic figure of Ukraine’s most famous contemporary composer. The screening will be followed by a short video presentation by the filmmaker, Serhiy Bukovsky. A discussion will follow, with Anna Stavychenko, founder and artistic director of 1991 Project and Harriman Resident; Liuba Morozova, Classical Music Programme Manager at the Ukrainian Institute; and Céline Meyer, production and booking manager at the Orchestre National de France. Both the documentary and video presentation will be screened in Ukrainian with English subtitles. The discussion will be held in English.

There is a rumor in the Kyiv musical community: once upon a time, in private conversation, Queen Elizabeth II mentioned Valentyn Silvestrov as one of her favorite composers of the modern age. The Royal Press Office hasn’t confirmed it, so no one knows for sure. But the stature of Silvestrov justifies this rumor. Highly respected by the world’s best music professionals, he remains a mystery for a wide audience.
The documentary Silvestrov, dedicated to this brilliant Ukrainian composer, is far from a traditional biopic about a prominent person. It is an observation, a confession and, most of all, a story of great talent set against the backdrop of uncertain times.
Of course, film authors pay tribute to the composer’s creative techniques: avantgarde of the 1960s, forced into underground at the times of socialist realism, postmodernism (his main obsession during the 1970s), metaphorical music and contemporary pieces that charm audiences around the world. But it is also a personal story of a genius mind with its oddity, curiosity and emotional depth.
The director
graduated from the Film Department of the Karpenko-Karyi Kyiv State Institute of Theatrical Arts. After serving in the Soviet Army, he worked at the Ukrainian documentary film studio for more than a decade.
THE SILVESTROV DAYS IN PARIS
Valentyn Silvestrov, one of the best-known contemporary Ukrainian composers, has gained international recognition and praise through worldwide performances. A prominent member of the “Kyiv avant-garde” of the 1960s, Silvestrov and his work have received increased interest in the past year, as Western audiences have shown a growing interest in Ukrainian musical heritage.
The Silvestrov Days in Paris offer a multi-faceted understanding of the composer’s artistic evolution, in both the Ukrainian and wider European contexts. Concerts, a film screening, and a book presentation permit a Parisian audience to explore the inner complexities of a brilliant and prolific musical genius.

1991 Project
The 1991 Project is a non-profit association whose purpose is to safeguard and promote Ukrainian culture, by helping Ukrainian artists preserve their artistic skills in France and in the Western world. The production of concerts and cultural events gives visibility to the Ukrainian musical repertoire, in its tight connections to the European and North American cultural traditions.
The project’s founder and artistic director, Anna Stavychenko, is a musicologist, music critic, and classical music producer. She is currently the mission head of the Philharmonie de Paris project that helps Ukrainian musicians exiled in France, and the CEO of the Lyatoshynsky Club, which aims to promote the Ukrainian repertoire. She is also a Harriman resident at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination.

The "Friends of Ukrainian culture in France" is a non-profit organization (French law of 1901) created during the Russian invasion of Ukraine to foster durable cultural ties between France and Ukraine; promote cooperation between cultural institutions, particularly French, Ukrainian and European; support artists and cultural initiatives; and promote understanding of Ukrainian culture, in all its forms, in France and by the French.
The association primarily works to organize high-level cultural projects, with the aim to showcase Ukrainian culture in all of its forms to a general audience, and to demonstrate the historic and contemporary ties between Ukrainian and French culture.

Bien sûr, les auteurs de films rendent hommage aux techniques de création du compositeur : avant-garde des années 1960, contrainte à l'underground à l'époque du réalisme socialiste, postmodernisme (sa principale obsession des années 1970), musique métaphorique et pièces contemporaines qui charment le public du monde entier. Mais c'est aussi l'histoire personnelle d'un esprit de génie avec sa bizarrerie, sa curiosité et sa profondeur émotionnelle.
Le réalisateur
est diplômé du département de cinéma de l'Institut d'État des arts théâtraux Karpenko-Karyi Kyiv. Après avoir servi dans l'armée soviétique, il a travaillé au studio de cinéma documentaire ukrainien pendant plus d'une décennie.

Valentyn Silvestrov, compositeur ukrainien contemporain, est renommé à l’internationale grâce à des performances dans le monde entier. 1991 Project
Le Projet 1991 est une association à but non lucratif dont la mission est de sauvegarder et de promouvoir la culture ukrainienne, en aidant les artistes ukrainiens à préserver leurs compétences artistiques en France et dans le monde occidental. La production de concerts et d'événements culturels donne de la visibilité au répertoire musical ukrainien, dont ses liens étroits avec les traditions européennes et nord-américaines.
La fondatrice et directrice artistique du projet, Anna Stavychenko, est musicologue, critique musicale et productrice de musique classique. Elle est actuellement chargée de mission du projet de la Philharmonie de Paris qui vient en aide aux musiciens ukrainiens exilés en France, et PDG du Lyatoshynsky Club, qui vise à promouvoir le répertoire ukrainien. L’activité principale de l’association est l’organisation de projets culturels de haut niveau afin de présenter tous les domaines de la culture ukrainienne au grand public et révéler le lien entre la vie culturelle historique et contemporaine ukrainienne avec la culture française.

Le lieu
