Documenting the joyful tradition of hand games, Black Girls Play traces the playground pastime from generation to generation, and explores its impact on music, dance, and popular culture today. The film, directed by Michéle Stephenson and Joe Brewster, is a celebration of roots, community, and the evolution of culture, from jazz to TikTok.

Bios 

Michèle Stephenson (@michele_0608) is a filmmaker, artist and author, who draws on her Haitian and Panamanian roots to think radically and create immersive and hybrid forms of storytelling to build her worlds and narratives. Her feature documentary American Promise was nominated for three Emmys and won the Jury Prize at Sundance and her documentary Stateless was nominated for a Canadian Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary. Her recent documentary, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize award for U.S. Documentary Competition.
