TOP HAT & TALES: Harold Ross and The Making of The New Yorker
With Director Adam Van Doren
Thursday, March 27th at 6.00 P.M.
An In-Person and Online Program
Adam Van Doren, Director of TOP HAT & TALES: Harold Ross and The Making of The New Yorker, will present a screening of the film, which focuses on the story of the early history of The New Yorker magazine, and the life of its legendary creator Harold Ross. Stanley Tucci provides the narration.
Arguably the most sophisticated and witty magazine in history, The New Yorker celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, and has published such prose masters as J. D. Salinger, Rachel Carson, E. B. White, John Updike, as well as incomparable artists Charles Addams, Peter Arno, Helen Hokinson, James Thurber, and Roz Chast, among others.
The New York Times praised Mr. Van Doren’s production: “The appeal of this charming hour-long film comes from the way it reflects the glamorous era into which the magazine was born. Rich with film clips of the 20's and 30's -- jazz bands, speakeasies, skyscrapers on the rise -- it evokes the Manhattan that Astaire and Rogers so often glided through.” The documentary includes interviews with Calvin Trillin, Brendan Gill, Charles Schulz, Heywood Broun, Roz Chast, Al Hirschfeld and David Remnick, among others.
Adam Van Doren is an award-winning author, artist and filmmaker. He teaches at Yale University, and his paintings are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He is the author of An Artist in Venice; The House Tells the Story: Homes of the American Presidents; and In the Founders’ Footsteps: Landmarks of the American Revolution. Mr. Van Doren has also produced and directed Mark Van Doren: Portrait of a Poet, about his grandfather, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author; and James Thurber: The Life and Hard Times.
