Written by Flagg and Carol Sobieski, and starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker and Cicely Tyson. The film tells the story of a overweight, repressed housewife Evelyn Couch befriended by quirky octogenarian Ninny Threadgoode while visiting a cantankerous aunt in an convalescent home in Birmingham, Alabama and listening to Ninny's tales about her nearby home town, Whistle Stop.
