About this Event

'One of the greatest documentaries...a revelatory history lesson, a masterpiece of humanity, thoroughness and consumate film craft.' [Mike Leigh] 'Amazing. Beautifully done. Clever use of archive.' [Oiiver Stone] 'With tenacity and care, Taghi Amirani has dragged official secrets back into the light.' [Daily Telegraph] 'Powerful. Authoritative. As gripping as any thriller.' [The Guardian]

While making a documentary on the CIA/MI6 1953 coup in Iran, director Taghi Amirani and editor Walter Murch discover archive material that has remained hidden for decades. The 16mm footage and documents allow them to tell the story of the overthrow of the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in unprecedented detail.

But the archives also lead to explosive revelations about dark secrets, concealed for 67 years, which Ralph Fiennes helps to bring back to life. What begins as an historical documentary, about four days in August 1953, turns into a dramatic live investigation, chasing new leads.

The UK government continues to deny its involvement in the coup.
