Warming up to our 24th conference POWERS OF TRUTH: China, Tech, Art & Resistance (1-3 October, Studio 1, Kunstquartier Bethanien & online - https://www.disruptionlab.org/powers-of-truth), we invite you to join us for a film screening of ‘Black Bauhinia’, a feature-length documentary film which aims to explain the political situation in Hong Kong to western audiences and give activists a voice that they wouldn't otherwise have. The screening is followed by a Q&A with director Malte Kaeding and activist Ray Wong.

“Black Bauhinia” 香港本色
Black Bauhinia examines Hong Kong’s struggle against the Chinese regime and evokes universal contemplations about resistance against authoritarianism, the question of identity and the meaning of homeland. The documentary offers the first comprehensive and balanced account of localism – a movement that has radically transformed Hong Kong’s domestic and international relations and attracted the wrath of the Chinese regime.
The collaborative filmmaking approach incorporates diverse voices of frontline protestors, different generations of activists and critics of the movement. The documentary captures the desperation of activists holding on to hope and their fears of defeat and the futility of their sacrifices. This is juxtaposed with the painful reflections of responsibility and identity as refugees in the West. Black Bauhinia is a timely document of the fight against a disappearing Hong Kong.

Ray Wong (Hong Kong Activist, Founder of Hong Kong Indigenous, HK/DE)
Dr. Malte Kaeding (Senior Lecturer in International Politics, University of Surrey, DE/UK)
Dr. Malte Kaeding is Senior Lecturer in International Politics in the Department of Politics, University of Surrey. Previously he lectured at the University of Heidelberg and Hong Kong Baptist University. He is the co-founder and co-convenor of the Hong Kong Studies Association and an Associate Fellow of the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan, University of Tübingen. Malte is also the director and co-producer of a documentary film on Hong Kong.
Ray Wong Toi-yeung is the first activist from Hong Kong granted asylum by a European country. He was the founder of an influential activist group "Hong Kong Indigenous" whose slogan "Liberate Hong Kong Revolution of our times" is one of the most popular slogans in the Anti Extradition Law Movement.
