Explore screen printing onto blank tote bags and t-shirts. This one day workshop will cover;
Preparing imagery for screen printing,
Coating & exposing screens,
Mixing inks,
Screen printing methods,
Heat setting/fixing inks to make them washable,
You’ll come away from the session with some finished products with your own design screen printed onto them and a whole lot of knowledge to continue with your own projects.
Who is the workshop for?
This is ideal for complete beginners in screen printing or those who wish to gain an understanding of how to use the screen printing facilities at Leeds Print Workshop.
What will I make?
You’ll screen print your own t-shirt and tote bag to take home, as well as some textile sample pieces which can be used as wall hangings, cushions or future sewing projects.
Do I need to bring anything?
A plain t-shirt, a tote bag and some plain cotton pieces will be provided, along with all the equipment and materials for screen printing. If you have any cotton or linen fabrics, or other products such as plain tea towels feel free to bring these along. It will be useful to bring some black and white drawings or images with you to use as inspiration for your design.
Who is my tutor?
Carl McCarron is an artist who works primarily with screen printing processes and is fascinated with the idea of fictions and images of illegality. He enjoys toying with the laws of copyright. He is interested in colour and the effects of multiple layers of transparency.
Carl loves to print and works as one of our technicians, supporting our members during open access sessions. He also teaches our monthly Printed By Us screen printing sessions in collaboration with St Georges Crypt, which is part of a recovery programme for people who have experienced complex issues such as addiction and homelessness.

Accessibility
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at [email protected] to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
