"Do you like scary movies?"Are you old enough to remember landline phones? Rewinding VHS tapes before taking them back to the video store? Teen heartthrob Skeet Ulrich? Then you probably remember what a sensation SCREAM caused when it first came out in 1996.
Heavily influenced by slashers of the late '70s/'80s, SCREAM single-handedly ushered in the return of the popular horror subgenre, which many considered dead and buried. By taking a meta approach to the standard “rules” (the virginal final girl, the bait-and-switch with the killer's identity, etc.), screamwriter Kevin Williamson and master director Wes Craven (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) upended everything we thought we knew about horror films, honoring and discarding time-worn formulas and terrifying audiences in the process.
By going meta, the movie winks at the audience and brings you in on the fun. So we figured, why not go meta on their meta? Not only will you get to nod knowingly at all of Jamie Kennedy’s musings about the rules of horror movies, but since this is an Alamo Drafthouse movie party, you get to join in on the action.
With the help of some fun props (such as red slime, intestine ribbon wands, and a sticker sheet with favorite moments and quotes from the movie), you get to scream along to every jump and twist. Even if you’ve seen SCREAM a hundred times, each scare will take you back to the first time you saw it, when your boyfriend with the frosted tip haircut nearly jumped out of his seat and spilled his popcorn all over your Von Dutch jeans (we’re speculating here).
So if you want to throw on your chunky sweater, blast some Alanis Morissette, and relive the glory days of the ’90s by revisiting an old favorite, or if you’re a bright-eyed young’n looking to experience a classic horror film on the big screen, come join us for what promises to be a bloody good time.
