Join Lakes & Mountains with Matt for an exhilarating scrambling adventure on one of the Lake District’s most iconic mountain routes—Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. This challenging and rewarding route offers breathtaking views, thrilling scrambles and an unforgettable mountaineering experience. The Journey Begins: Glenridding to Striding Edge
Starting in the picturesque village of Glenridding, nestled on the shores of Ullswater, we set off early in the morning, well-equipped for the adventure ahead. The initial ascent follows a well-trodden path through lush meadows and rugged terrain, gradually gaining height and revealing stunning panoramic views over Ullswater and the surrounding fells.
As we approach Striding Edge, the real challenge begins. This dramatic arête, a narrow ridge with exposed sections, demands concentration, steady footing and a head for heights. Our experienced guides, led by Matt, will assess weather conditions, individual abilities and confidence levels before making a final decision on tackling the ridge.
Safety is always our priority and alternative routes to the summit will be considered if necessary.
Striding Edge: The Thrill of the Scramble
If conditions allow, we embark on the exhilarating traverse of Striding Edge. This classic Grade 1 scramble involves hands-on rock sections, requiring careful movement along its airy crest. The adrenaline rush is complemented by awe-inspiring views of Red Tarn below and the vast Lake District landscape beyond. We take our time, ensuring all participants feel comfortable and supported as they navigate the ridge.
Reaching the end of Striding Edge, a short but steep scramble leads us up to the summit plateau of Helvellyn, where the terrain becomes more forgiving. Standing at 950m (3,117 ft), Helvellyn is England’s third-highest peak, offering spectacular 360-degree views of mountains, lakes, and distant peaks.
The Descent: Swirral Edge and Red Tarn
After a well-earned break at the summit, we begin our descent via Swirral Edge. While less exposed than Striding Edge, this narrow ridge still requires careful footwork and offers an exciting descent with equally stunning scenery. Swirral Edge guides us gracefully down toward the serene waters of Red Tarn, a glacial lake set amidst the towering peaks.
From Red Tarn, we follow a well-defined path back to Glenridding, completing the exhilarating circular route. Though the descent remains steep in sections, the sense of achievement and camaraderie among fellow hikers makes every step worthwhile.
