About this Event
The Pankhurst Seminar Series, AI in Healthcare theme, is delighted to host Dr Harriet Unsworth and Dr Andre Freitas on July 10th at Vaughan House @ University of Manchester.
Dr Unsworth will first present "An Introduction to the Digital Cancer Research team at CRUK National Biomarker Centre" followed by a talk entitled "Scientific Reasoning in Oncology supported by Large Language Models (LLMs)" from Dr Freitas:
"In this talk, we will cover how the emergent use of Generative AI, in particular LLMs, within the domain of the biomedical sciences can be used to augment and accelerate scientific reasoning and discovery in oncology research. We will defend why the different innovative aspects within Generative AI represent a fundamental phase transition as an infrastructure to support scientific discovery and will uncover the modelling and architectural patterns which deliver controlled inference within the oncology domain."
Speaker bios:
Harriet Unsworth is the team lead for the Digital Cancer Research team at the CRUK National Biomarker Centre. She joined the NBC in 2023 from the Translation Team at the Wellcome Trust, and prior to this the NICE Office for Digital Health. She is an expert on AI and digital health, having co-authored the NICE Evidence Standards Framework for digital health and care, and served as a committee member for the first British Standard on AI in health and care, BS30440.
André Freitas is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Manchester, an AI Group leader at the Digital Cancer Research Team at the National Biomarker Centre (NBC) and a research group leader at the IDIAP Research Institute. His main research interests are on enabling the development of AI methods to support complex, explainable and evidence-based reasoning in order to support AI-augmented scientific discovery. In particular, he investigates how the combination of neural and symbolic data representation paradigms can deliver better scientific inference.
