What can a small archaeological site on the coast of the Burin Peninsula reveal about the development of the cod fishery over the last 500 years? Located in Little St. Lawrence, Turpin’s Island was occupied between the 16th and 20th centuries—by Basques, followed by French, English, and eventually Newfoundland fisherfolk. This talk draws on archaeological data recovered from Turpin’s Island to explore its long history, and to show how shifts in its occupation were shaped by broader geopolitical and environmental forces that transformed the regional economy.
