(Very) Remote Work: Using physics to probe the Arctic atmosphere
Satellite measurements and climate models have concluded that the Arctic is warming at 3-4 times the global average rate, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. How do we know that satellites and models are accurate? By validating them! This talk will discuss some ground-based instruments and how their Arctic measurements are used to evaluate satellite data and climate change models, measure wildfire smoke plumes, detect ozone depletion, and more - from how they work, to where they are, to what they can tell us.
Our very special guest speakers, Erin McGee and Kevin Joshy, are both Ph.D. candidates at the University of Toronto, working with Dr. Kim Strong, one of the founders of the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Eureka, Nunavut (80N, 86W).
