Menopause impacts 50% of the population, but remains a somewhat taboo subject. Join us for an informal chat about the health impacts.
About this Event

Often referred to as “The Change”, menopause has a significant impact on women’s health. Despite the profound effects of menopause throughout the body, our understanding of menopause is extremely limited, in large part because of a lack of research dedicated to women’s health beyond “bikini medicine” – a term coined by cardiologist and women’s health pioneer Dr. Nanette Wenger.

In this edition of Science on Tap, University of Guelph PhD student Parastoo Mashouri will explore the effects of menopause on muscle function, examining insights from both animal models and human studies. She will discuss what menopause and perimenopause are, and how they are typically studied in the context of muscle function, review key findings from the literature, and consider whether exercise can help alleviate muscle function impairments associated with menopause.

Did you know that menopause is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death for women worldwide? In the second part of this event, Dr. Glen Pyle from the Women’s Health Research Institute at BC Women’s Hospital and IMPART at Dalhousie Medicine will explore the impact of menopause on cardiovascular health, and discuss the myths and misconceptions about hormone replacement therapy and cardiovascular disease.

Whether you are pre- or postmenopausal, or simply care for people going through “The Change”, this event will provide the latest information on an important health issue, and help increase understanding of women’s health.
