Summary: Return of the Western Flyer
The Western Flyer—first built as a Monterey sardine boat and later made famous by John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts during their 1940 journey to the Sea of Cortez—has been fully restored as a state‑of‑the‑art research and education vessel.
In this talk, Jack Barth, a professor at Oregon State University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, will share the latest chapter in the Western Flyer’s story. He will including highlights from its recent spring 2025 voyage to the Gulf of California and plans for the ship to visit Oregon and the Pacific Northwest in spring 2026.
