Join speaker and musical guest Dr. Moritz Helmstaedter, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research and pianist for an evening of music and scientific insight! This program combines insights into the brain’s neuronal networks with piano music by one of the greatest composers of all time, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). The lecture explores how the brain processes expectations—and how composers skillfully use those expectations to both satisfy and surprise their listeners. It also examines the neural networks involved in memory, which also allow us to recognize and recall our favorite pieces of music. The musical selections will include works from Bach’s Partita No. 1, the Goldberg Variations, and the English Suite No. 2.
