About this Event

Insects: we live with them, admire them, fear them and are fascinated by them. Wedepend absolutely on them for all our food and for supporting the rest of the biosphere, but they can also be a nuisance or a threat to us. They are a great way to start becoming more familiar with the natural world.

The workshop is led by educators from Wytham Woods, the Ashmolean and the Natural History Museum. The picture is the face of the buff tip moth at Wytham - doesn't it look like the happiest moth in the Woods?

During three lovely hours in Wytham Woods you will be able to meet, admire and learn the secrets of some of Wytham's beautiful 6-legged inhabitants. We will set a moth trap the day before and when you arrive we will see who turned up in the night. We will also rummage in dead wood (one of the most important habitats in the Woods) to see what we can find.

You can try your hand at macrophotography using your phone (Kim's an enthusiastic - see here).

We will also look at some pictures of insects in the art works in the Ashmolean Museum - you can find them when you next visit the Museum. And you can try your hand at some detailed drawings of your own from life or photograph. The picture below is what one of the students did last time we ran this workshop.

The workshop will be in the open air and under our lovely gazebos at the chalet in the heart of the Woods.

We will start at 10am and end with a camp fire and marshmallows. Parents are welcome to join us at 1pm with a picnic and enjoy the peace and quiet, autumn leaves, and the camp fire. Please arrive at 9.45 so that we can do a quick safety check and set off in good time.

This event is suitable for anyone of secondary age who would like to learn more about our amazing mini wildlife, and enjoy a peaceful morning amongst the autumn leaves.
