Don't miss Malta's favourite Science & Arts Festival as it takes over Sala San Duminku on 27–28 Sept. Filled with fun for the whole family!
About this Event

This year’s festival features international and Maltese performers and researchers in a whole new range of science-inspired shows, music and dances. All performances will take place at Sala San Duminku, Valletta on 27 Sept from 4-11 pm and 28 Sept from 10 am–11 pm. This year’s lineup is themed around J.E.D.I. (‘Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion') with shows that give you the opportunity to create brain-inspired art, solve mysteries about science experiments gone wrong, play games to control the world’s most powerful machine, and listen to music inspired by our DNA. Scroll down for more details then make sure to book your slot through Eventbrite.

The festival emotionally engages and empowers audiences with the knowledge and skills necessary to take action locally and globally via informed decision-making. Accompanied by pre-festival events and post-festival content, this year’s Science in the City is an experience you won’t want to miss.

To celebrate our J.E.D.I. theme, don’t forget to stop by the SHE CAN exhibition (organised by the University of Malta) in the Sala San Duminku Foyer. Read about the experiences of 26 women in Malta who have made remarkable contributions to the fields of STEM, both locally and abroad. This exhibit aims to shine a light on successful role models, inspire future generations to open their eyes to possible careers in STEM, and challenge cultural norms. True JEDI warriors!

Performance Descriptions

Am I Normal: Lightsabers to the ready as we work to annihilate the idea of ‘normal’! Create a unique piece of brain art while exploring statistics, genetics and evolution to celebrate the huge variability of the human population. (By UK-based Brainsastic!Science)

Hunting the Higgs: The Large Hadron Collider is the world's largest and most powerful machine, but could you control it for yourself?  Become a particle physicist for the day and see if you have what it takes to control the Large Hadron Collider. Expect interactive games, hilarious jokes, loud explosions and lots of audience participation. This is no place for the faint of heart! (By Dr Sam Gregson & Prof. Ing. Gianluca Valentino)

Ripped Genes: "Ripped Genes," is the intriguing story of Eugene, an unlucky scientist whose DNA structure collapses into pieces during a lab accident. With the help of his friend, a forensic investigator, Eugene struggles to rebuild his DNA structure. Find out more about this enthralling story and discover that despite our unique traits, we have so much in common with everyone around us. (By Ringroad Theatre)

DNA Rhythms: DNA contains the building blocks of life. But did you know that those blocks can be translated into music notes to create songs? In this performance, jazz musician Diccon Cooper uses DNA sequences from geneticist Prof. Joseph Borg to create methodical and mutated melodies. (By Diccon Cooper & Prof. Joseph Borg)

Boo Recaccia (Dance): Imagine how many things could be achieved more easily, and more enjoyably if we chose not to do them alone every time. In this dance performance, discover the power of human connection and support through rhythm, maths and movement. Learn about the innovative methodology that celebrates co-development with people from diverse backgrounds. (By Buddies’ Experiments -Cc Marmaritsaki & Marina Sasli)
