Science & Religion: Toward a Shared Framework

We're Discourse BHAM, a pop-up public lecture series bringing the most interesting academic talks to Birmingham's bars & breweries. It's like a college class, but there's drinking.
Tickets are $15. Seating is limited.
Science and religion have long been at war—or so the story goes. But even though Nietzsche’s madman declared “God is dead” nearly two centuries ago, the relationship between science and spirituality still shapes our lives in deep and surprising ways.
This Discourse isn’t about whether science and religion are at odds, but what happens when we stop assuming they have to be. People tend to hold strong views about both, and institutions like the church and academia carry serious cultural weight.
Dr. Jonathan Roth, a professor of Neurobiology, explores how our brains and spiritual beliefs shape one another, drawing from cultural perspectives on education, the emerging field of neurotheology, and our own lived experiences.
Come with curiosity and a willingness to wrestle with what we think we know. And be ready to talk. The speaker is a neuroscience educator who navigates these tensions both inside and outside of the classroom in real time.
Jonathan Roth, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in Neurobiology at UAB. He’s an award-winning teacher who directs courses for undergraduates, masters, Ph.D., and medical students. Outside of the classroom, he co-directs a summer research program and studies how to improve science education through cultural competency and active learning.
