LASER Walk: Sequoia Sentinels Call for A Thousand Year Commitment: A Contemplative Walk with the Sequoias of Santa Fe
The most massive of trees, sequoias have been planted around the world, but are struggling to survive in their native habitat. Join us in a contemplative walk to sequoia trees planted in Santa Fe as we consider how we can work together for to contribute to their survival and as well as our own.
WALK DETAILS: The group will walk to several sequoia trees in the area, within about a one mile radius of the Capital.
START LOCATION DETAILS: We will meet the first sequoia trees on Don Gaspar Avenue, just north of Paseo de Peralta on the grassy area in front of the New Mexico State Capital, to the right of the staircase leading to the building. Look for people holding signs.
Our guide to the sequoias will be pioneering eco-artist and SFAI artist-in-residence Ruth Wallen. For over a decade Ruth has been walking with trees, grieving with the dead ravaged by urbanization, globalization in the form of introduced species, and climate change in all its guises including drought, beetles, and fire.
Ruth Wallen www.ruthwallen.net is a multi-media artist and writer whose work is dedicated to encouraging dialogue around ecological and social justice. After working as an environmental scientist, she turned to art to pose questions beyond disciplinary boundaries, address values informing environmental policy, and contribute to the developing field of ecological art. Her interactive installations, nature walks, web sites, artist books, performative lectures, and writing have been widely distributed/published and exhibited. Active in the border region, she has written about race, gender and visual culture, was a member of the multinational artist collective Las Comadres, and a Fulbright Lecturer at the Autonomous University of Baja California, Tijuana. Committed to student-centered learning, she served as chair and core faculty in the MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts Program at Goddard College for many years. Her work is deeply informed by Buddhist practice.
Presented in coordination with Leonardo/International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology (ISAST); the University of New Mexico (UNM), College of Fine Arts, The Santa Fe Art Institute and supported in part by New Mexico Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
