Courtyard Film Screenings: Sci-Fi Under the Stars!
VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY
Presented in association with dublab
What better place to enjoy a bevy of robots, 3-eyed aliens, Mumu monsters and wonderfully cheezy lightsaber rip-off battles than in the courtyard of PRS under the beautiful Los Angeles sky?! Join us for our first-ever open air courtyard Summer screening series at PRS, featuring three delirious cosmic confections: STARCRASH (1978) starring Caroline Munro and Marjoe Gortner on 7/5, BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS (1980) produced by the late great Roger Corman on 8/2, and the surreal Croatian sci-fi / fantasy VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY on 9/6 – all projected on the outside of the classic mid-century PRS Auditorium! Prior to the screenings, a DJ will be spinning cosmic music in the courtyard, so come early to grab a spot and enjoy the sounds!
VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY (GOSTI IZ GALAKSIJE), 1981, Deaf Crocodile Films, 82 min. Dir. Dusan Vukotic.
Imagine if Troma Films had been hired to make a Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning kids’ show, and you have some idea of the unspeakable strangeness of VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY, a truly gonzo Croatian sci-fi / fantasy about a struggling writer, Robert (Zarko Potocnjak), who dreams up a story of gold-skinned alien androids named Andra, Targo and Ulu from a distant planet. Incredibly, his fictional alien creations become reality, causing chaos in his relationship with his girlfriend Biba (Lucie Zulová) and threatening his small seaside village. The alluring lead robot Andra (Ksenia Prohaska) looks like H.R. Giger re-designed the Maschinenmensch from Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS; watch for the scene where she pours hot coffee and cream out of her fingertips. But for sheer jawdropping insanity, nothing rivals the Mumu Monster -- created for the film by legendary Czech animator Jan Švankmajer --, a rubber-suited, multi-tentacled creation that destroys a wedding party, ripping off heads and spouting plumes of toxic green smoke while a blind accordion player blithely plays his squeezebox. VISITORS was a rare live-action feature from animator Dusan Vukotic (1927-1998), best known for his stunning UPA-style cartoon shorts including “Cow On The Moon” (1959) and the Oscar-winning “The Substitute” (1961). This long-unavailable genre treat has been newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile and Zagreb Film in Croatia. In Croatian with English subtitles. - Film & synopsis courtesy of Deaf Crocodile.
About dublab:
dublab is a Los Angeles-based, community-supported internet radio station and creative collective dedicated to the growth of positive music, arts, and culture. Founded in 1999, dublab has been broadcasting since the “dot-com era” with the mission to share forward-thinking, freeform radio with an international audience. dublab’s programming has since expanded to include the production of original art exhibits, films, television, events, and community education projects as well as broadcast on affiliate stations in Germany, Japan, Spain, and Brazil.
Each month, dublab showcases over 180 radio shows from some of the world’s most talented DJs, musicians, journalists, and artists. Each show is distinct and entirely freeform: we take pride in empowering our DJs to freely play the music that best shares their individual story. Beyond broadcast, dublab produces and hosts several multimedia projects and exhibits each year, most often made possible by the support of public and foundation project grants. Through local events, international broadcasts, and collaborative multimedia projects, dublab has helped define and connect the next wave of arts, music, and culture across the Los Angeles and international communities.
