For kids who love both art and science, this 2.5-hour Saturday class at Elachee offers a unique, hands-on experience in natural science illustration. This course is taught by Noah Smith, who currently works as a Medical Illustrator within the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. He received his Master's in Medical Illustration from Augusta University. Noah loves to share his passion for art and science, and is excited to spark an interest in scientific illustration within his students! Each session begins with a guided hike through the Chicopee Woods, where students use observational sketching and note-taking to create their own handmade field guides. Afterward, the group transitions indoors for a deep-dive art project that brings a scientific theme to life through illustration.
Every month features a new theme—botanical illustration, animal anatomy, earth science, and more—so students can continue exploring fresh topics and skills. From watercolor bird studies inspired by Audubon to detailed insect diagrams and magnified plant drawings, these projects spark creativity while strengthening scientific observation.
