Trans rights activist and athlete Schuylar Bailar presents his urgent guide to gender and why it matters.
About this Event

Schuyler Bailar (he/him) made history as the first openly transgender NCAA Division I athlete, swimming for the men’s team at Harvard University. Now, with anti-transgender legislation being introduced in state governments around the United States in record-breaking numbers, Bailar presents a relatable, science-backed, and common-sense guide to the conversation about gender identity. Much in the way that So You Want to Talk About Race broke through to a national stage to discuss race in America, He/She/They takes readers through subjects ranging from why pronouns are important to the furor over bathrooms and trans women in sports.

The stakes for trans people are at an all-time high. Join us as Bailar, who has appeared in countless news and media outlets including the New York Times, CNN, the Guardian, ABC, and 60 Minutes, offers an honest and compassionate counternarrative to a conversation that has been deceptively politicized.

About the Author

Schuyler Bailar is an educator, author, and advocate. He is also the first transgender athlete to compete in any sport on an NCAA Division I men’s team. He holds a degree in Cognitive Neuroscience and Evolutionary Psychology from Harvard University, and he continues his academic pursuits through public health and psychology research focusing on transgender health. Schuyler also hosts the hit podcast Dear Schuyler on gender and culture and is the creator of the groundbreaking LaneChanger.com gender literacy online learning series.
