Schubert was remarkably prolific, writing over 1,500 works in his short career. Born in 1797 near Vienna, he showed uncommon gifts for music from an early age, winning a scholarship to the Stadtkonvikt school at the age of 11. Here he became acquainted with the music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and later studied composition with Antonio Salieri. In 1815, as an 18-year-old, Schubert composed over 20,000 bars of music, including the Mass No. 2 in G – the choral centrepiece of this concert.During and after his life Schubert’s music was celebrated in Schubertiades, often informal gatherings held in private homes. In this spirit, Singers of Southern Tasmania is delighted to present a Schubertiade spanning Schubert’s career, from the Mass No. 2 to the sublime Shepherd on the Rock, written in 1828 during the final months of his life.
