ENJOY the brilliance of pianist Calvin Abdiel, who, at 23, is making a place for himself in the international music scene. He is the only Australian pianist in over twenty years to have made the Sydney International Piano Competition finals. As the youngest competitor in 2021, he placed third. He joins local Wollongong violinist Cedar Newman, who is a scholarship student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Together, they present works by Schubert and Strauss. Schubert composed his 'Grand Duo' for violin and piano at 20 - during the dawn of the Romantic period. Strauss composed his magnificent Sonata for Violin and Piano at 23 - during the twilight of the Romantic period. Passionate, colourful and rich with melodies, these works are brought to life by internationally celebrated pianist Calvin Abdiel, 22, and violinist Cedar Newman, 20, a President's Scholarship student at the esteemed Manhattan School of Music New York. A Haydn solo sonata for piano shares a musical language with Schubert, while a Ysaye solo sonata for violin moves the music into the twentieth century with echoes of Bach and the Baroque.
