Join us at the SCHS Autumn Conference to explore the historic role of the church in society in Scotland.
About this Event

Our autumn conference will explore the theme of Church and Society. We are delighted to have Dr Emma Macleod (Stirling Univeristy) as our keynote speaker. Dr Macleod will explore the interaction of faith and citizenship in her keynote paper, titled

'James Wodrow (1730–1810): Faith and Citizenship in Parish Ministry in Eighteenth-Century Ayrshire'

The call for papers is currently open for short, twenty-minute papers on any aspect of the Scottish church and society. This conference will be a hybrid event, hosted by St Augustine's United Church on George IV Bridge - please note the change of venue. Consequently, speakers and attendees will have the option of being online or in-person.

Proposed papers might touch on issues such as:

  • Church and philanthropy
  • The moral voice of the church
  • Political Christianity
  • The church as an agent for social change
  • Faith and sectarianism in society
  • Piety within the public sphere

If you are interested in sharing some of your own research in this area, please send a 250 word abstract with a short biographical note to [email protected] by Monday 13 October. We welcome proposals from postgraduate students, early career researchers, and independent or established scholars. No one period will receive precedence; proposals will be assessed according to their novelty, appeal, and relevance to the theme. Interdisciplinary approaches are also encouraged - art, economic, gender, intellectual, legal, literary, political, and social historians are warmly encouraged to apply. Please specify whether you intend to deliver your paper in-person or remotely when you submit your abstract.

Online attendance is priced at £5; in-person tickets will cost £10 (full price) or £5 (student/unwaged/Society member) and includes the cost of tea/coffee and a sandwich lunch.

The full programme will be circulated when the call for papers closes.
