School of Nursing Honors & Pinning Ceremony
About this Event

The School of Nursing hosts a Nursing Honors and Pinning Ceremony for our graduating students. The pinning ceremony is a time-honored nursing school tradition which signifies the nursing graduate's official initiation into the brotherhood and sisterhood of nurses. This ceremony celebrates the transition from being nursing students to nursing professionals through the act of receiving a pin.

• If you are unsure, do not hesitate to ask!

WHAT TO EXPECT - Graduates

• Students should select the person they would like to pin them. When choosing a pinner, students should consider someone who has made an impact on their educational journey or their decision to be a nurse. The School of Nursing recommends choosing only one person as your designated pinner.

 Should your Pinner need special accommodations, please let the School of Nursing know as soon as possible.

• Doors to the Student Center Building do not open until 9:00AM

• Doors to the Room 120 AB will open at 10:00 AM. Guests may arrive early, but they will not be able to enter the auditorium until the doors open.

• Students should wear comfortable, business casual attire.

 White Coats are not required, and Scrubs are discouraged. If you choose to wear your White Coat, please make certain that it is pressed/ironed.

 Honor Cords are encouraged.

 The space tends to be rather warm, so layers are encouraged

• Students should arrive no later than 10:15am.

• Upon arrival, students should sign in and collect their name card from the designated check-in table.

• Students will be asked to line up in alphabetical order and according to Program of Study for the procession. Ushers will be on hand to assist with this process.

• All participants and guests are encouraged to wear masks over their mouth and nose upon entering the Student Center and throughout the entirety of the program.

 At this time masks are NOT required. Should the DePaul COVID protocol change during the Quarter, you will be notified.

• Family and friends who take photos should take care to not block any of the doors or aisles in 120AB.

• Parking will be available in the DePaul University Lincoln Park garages for a reduced rate with a DePaul ID. Street parking is available in the surrounding area, but guests should make note of parking rates and posted signage.

• Students do not need to bring anything to the event. Upon check in, students will be given a note card with their name on it. You will hand this to the appropriate faculty member during the procession of candidates as they cross the stage to ensure that the correct name is announced.

• If your guest or Pinner requires any accommodations, please let us know by writing to Laura Devaney at [email protected].

WHAT TO EXPECT –Pinners

• Guests who have been chosen to pin a student should sit close to the aisle nearest the venue entrance.

• Pinners should use their event program to follow along as graduates are called, alphabetically, to walk across the stage.

• When your graduate is about 10 names from the person currently on stage, rise and make your way to aisle closest to the doors, where an usher will greet you.

• As your graduate enters the stage, they will be photographed with the School of Nursing Director and Dean of the College of Science and Health. Students then walk toward you, the Pinner to receive their pin. Once on stage, you will be handed a pin with any necessary instructions.

• If you have any questions or need help during the event, staff will be on hand to assist you.
