SCCTE strives to offer research, strategies, and resources for our members. For the first time at our annual SCCTE conference, we are collaborating with the Avery Research Center to offer an off-site session for attendees. Hosted by Dr. Tamara Butler, this off-site session is sure to inspire and engage those who attend. Note: Session is limited to 30 attendees. Attendees are responsible for transportation. Discount for local restaurant provided to attendees.
Curious to learn more about Avery alumnae Septima Poinsette Clark, Lois Simms, Ethelyn Murray Parker and more? Join us at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture for a commemorative workshop, "(Un)archiving Joy and Teaching with the Fragments." In 2025, we will celebrate the 160th anniversary of the Avery Normal Institute, which was founded as a school to certify Black teachers during the Reconstruction Era. We are fortunate to still operate out of the building that once held the school. Join us for one of the first major conversations of the 160th anniversary.
"(Un)archiving Joy and Teaching with the Fragments" is a three-part workshop designed for conference attendees to think about the art of archiving and unarchiving. In this session, educators will work with the Avery Research Center's Archivists and Executive Director to learn about the pedagogical possibilities of archives across the African diaspora. For the first part of the workshop, attendees will learn about "archiving" and the Black women educators who are in the Avery Research Center's archival collections. Attendees will think about "unarchiving" through an artmaking activity using archival materials for the second part of the workshop. The workshop concludes with a self-guided tour of the Avery Research Center and conversations about archival projects, initiatives and collectives that can be incorporated into K-12 classrooms.
