Sayon Camara is a djembefola (a master of the drum known as a djembe) and a cultural ambassador for his people, the Malinke of Guinea. By perfecting his artistry and working from his heart to preserve and share generations of his village's music, he insures that Malinke culture will be remembered. This performance (with an educational element) of traditional music from Sayon's home in West Africa will be participatory. He passionately and respectfully delivers the songs and stories of his people, infusing them with the gentle electrifying warmth of pure joy and crystalline clarity combined with an impeccable sense of time.
Be ready to respond with song in Sayon's original language (he will help you with this!), to hear the rich oral stories behind the music, and to feel the irresistible pull of the rhythms bringing you to movement and dance.
